Ballyellin and Tomdarragh

Standing Stone

This granite stone stands over 2.5 metres high. It is one of several grooved standing stones in Carlow. It is the only county in Ireland where this feature appears. Other examples can be seen at Ardristan, Glenoge and Williamstown. The grooves on this stone are smaller than the others. I did not have time to view the stone close up, as my car was blocking the nearby road. I will call back next time I am in the area and hopefully get some good images of the grooves.

Situated: From Goresbridge head east on the R720. After you cross the river into Carlow, take the second left turn at the sharp bend. Drive up this road for about 500 metres the stone is in a field on your right, behind a house. You can see the stone from a gate 60 metres beyond the house.
